These don't seem as bushy as they were last year.

Hi Sheila, I find these are a short lived perennial, but you can take root cuttings in winter, Derek.

I love these plants but for some reason cannot grow them. Planted many but none of them survived. Maybe our soil is too acidic. I know they like shady spots and our property should be perfect for them to thrive but in reality they do not like it here.

Derek, how short is "short lived"? I cannot grow them for more than couple of seasons.

Hi Klahanie, the term short lived can vary, but is usually between 3 and 5 years, sometimes if conditions are favourable, they can last longer, {as in this case}, they can gradually deteriorate, or just disappear completely 1 year, and never to be seen again, personally I've never had more than 3 seasons from them, Derek.

Hi Sheila, just 1 of those things, you have to put up with it, I never get too attatched to a plant, that I would be upset if it died on me, I once new a woman who had named every plant in her garden, not with the botanical name, more like a forename, even gender specific, I went round 1 day, and she was in tears because 1 of her plants had died on her, Derek.

Beautiful .

Hi, they can be divided, but very carefully, and should be done in early spring, or they can be left until the leaves die back, and then divided, Derek.
