I love these :)))

Yes they're lovely. You'll see them everywhere here - in street plantings, at parks, and in most gardens as they are so hardy and drought tolerant.

You're so lucky to see these growing so commonly Bernie, i wish i did !

I would probably say many, many more people grow these than annuals - they last longer and need far less water, which is a great attribute for a plant over here in this dry old land.

Is it the their drought tolerance rather than their need for heat that makes them successful ?

30 Aug, 2009

Yes absolutely - water is rather precious over here. Most populated areas of Oz are on quite severe water restrictions at times and sometimes for years on end - even floods don't relieve that situation most of the time because the rain doesn't always fall in the water catchment areas. I'm lucky I live in the spot I do because we have a decent water supply here - still on water restrictions though.

I've never tried to grow these, Bernieh, I think it would be too wet and cold for them. They're lovely.

Bscott - they do like it hot and dry with lots of sun.

Totally agree with you Maranddar - they're so colourful in the garden and so reliable here.

I love Gazanias as you can see from my motif. We haven't had many Gazania days in South Wales UK lately but I'm hopeful for later this week.

Hope the sun comes out and they put on a great display for you. I'm a big fan of gazanias too - they suit our climate here very well.

I bought a flat of ganzanias to try two summers ago...intrigued by the taffeta-like blossoms and their sizzling colours... they did very well in my semi-arid south facing front garden bed ...but in the last two years the maple tree has expanded it's shade and I've moved hostas into that area. They thrived in the hottest dryest part of my garden...great plants! are they perennial for you Bernieh?

I noticed they were open today it was overcast but warm then later we had a bit of sun. Forecast good for midweek but cold at night tho.

Hi Lori - yes these are perennials over here and they do love the hot dry parts of the garden.

Gardengirl - glad to hear you had a better day and your gazanias showed their lovely faces.
