I would say 10 years ago or for sure 15,you would NEVER see Dragon fruit in the SF bay area.

They have become extremely popular. The fruit is so nutritious...that's reason why.

It funny that they've never been too popular up there till now because they're as hardy as Epiphyllum hybrids.

1990,1998,maybe 2007's freezes. You have to remember,in the bay area Andy these plants are not well known. I've seen many a lightly frosted tropical...cut down and removed because the owner thought it was dead.
The culture- like the climate-takes time to adjust.

I can see why the 1990 freeze would have discouraged people from growing tropicals. Because it was so horrible! However, the 1998 freeze wasn't so bad. The 2007 freeze I wasn't living up in the Bay Area...so I'm not sure how bad it was. I just know none of the freezes after the 1990 freeze weren't as bad.
