Only just seen this as I am exploring the bearded iris section - what a beauty - are they a good plant to have in a border please ?

Very good Marie, if you have room for them and it's a nice sunny dryish spot. Plant them so the tops of the corms are above the soil as they won't flower if they're planted too deep. They like to be baked in the summer sunshine! Siberian Irises can be planted pretty much anywhere except very dry places. You also get some lovely dwarf bearded iris that don't grow so tall.

I have about 44 different varieties at present Mariek and adding at least another 16 by the end of summer!
If you find the right spot, with lots of sunshine and nothing covering the rhizome so it basks to its heart's content, you could be successful with the repeat irises. These are germanicas that rebloom in late summer and need feeding in spring, directly after flowering the first time and, if it hasn't flowered very late, eg September/October, after the second flush also.
They don't mind getting wet but need to be well drained as they wont tolerate constantly wet roots. I have fairly heavy clay soil and they seem to like this as long as its in the sun nearly all day. If you mulch, make sure it never covers the rhizome.
The saying with rhizome irises..they dont mind sharing a house but they want a room to themselves!
Like Karen..I LOVE irises!!

Oh yes, they are so beautiful and the scent is like honey, and there are so many colours now. I do hope my new Cherry dwarf ones flower this year. I planted them last year. I had them in my old garden and they are a lovely deep dark plum colour like really ripe cherries! If I lived somewhere warmer I would have loads of bearded Irises!

That sounds a beauty Karen, I only have 4 dwarf. Chanted, Forever Blue and Amherst Bluebeard. My favourite is the yellow and brown Meadow Court, named after the racehorse. A cherry red sounds superb! Cant wait for my brood to flower this year, Im ready with the camera primed cos with many will be the first time flowering.
You cant be without some Irises Marie!!

I agree, and if not the beardeds, you can go for the Sibiricas like me, they are much easier, but smaller flowers and sadly, no scent.
