Kalmia latifolia 'Tinkerbelle'

Kalmia latifolia 'Tinkerbelle' (Kalmia latifolia (Calico bush))

I've had trouble finding mountain laurels but came across this at a grocery store garden center last year when I was living near Lake Michigan. This was tagged as 'Elf' so it was a welcome surprise to see pink flowers instead of white. The flower color on this is just as good as the buds, a very rich pink.

I do not know what you mean under Mountain Laurel. Is it some sort of low bushy Prunus?

It is also known as Calico bush, the botanical name is Kalmia latifolia. It is a broadleaf evergreen with beautiful flowers native to the US. It has similar cultural requirements as rhododendrons but is a bit more demanding.

Kalmia! Ok, I understand now. Yes, I know kalmias, but they do not grow well in my garden. I think they require a lot of water.

They are like daphnes, they need very precise cultural requirements in order to do well. Once they are established they really don't require much water, my rhododendrons suffer more in hot/dry weather than my mountain laurels. They need good drainage and a more acidic soil than most plants, a pH of 4.5 is about perfect for them. If you mound up an area above ground for them with a 50/50 mix of peat moss and sand or peat moss and pine bark, they should do well. If you have a lot of minerals in your water, only water them with rain water or distilled water.

Well, only the description of this life minimum is too much, lol :)))

I have found them to be a bit tricky to care for, especially if you don't get it right the first time. If you get a good spot prepared and keep a watchful eye on them the first season, they really do reward you!
