Licuala ramsayi - Australian Fan Palm

This Australian Fan Palm is growing in the Botanical Building, which is a very large lath-house. It's been in the ground there for about ten years. It's now starting a trunk. It's a very slow growing palm native to tropical Northern Queensland, Australian rainforest. Photo taken in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. on Mar. 25, 2013.

Yes, I love your icon pic! It must be quite a sight to see them in their native habitat!
I wish this palm was more widely grown here. It needs a lot of shade, when young and tons of water. Fortunately, it's available in many nurseries; however, most people don't know how to take care of them. They think they can just put it in the ground and forget about it (which doesn't work in our dry climate).

Yes, I've seen hundreds growing at the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens, Kaneohe, O' ahu, Hawaii. They're all growing in the extremely fertile, volcanic soil in the tropical rainforest there. They're located in my favorite tropical botanical in the world, the only problem is the billions of mosquitoes! lol! :>)
