I have eaten it for the last 20 years . its usually ripe for Christmas. YOU ONLY EAT THE FRUIT AS THE LITTLE SEGMENTS LOOSEN AND FALL OFF,if you try to force the skin off there are little prickles in the flesh, once the segments fall off its safe to eat . When the fruit is ripe and that is when you see the first segments swell and loosen it is cut off and placed in brown paper bag , its checked each morning and you can eat the flesh tha is exposed .
