I like nicotiana for the scent.... terrific flowers though... have you seen/grown "Only the Lonely"? it's the tall white flowered tobacco... I've seen a bed of those plants that were almost 7 feet tall...and blooming their heads off!! lovely background plant for a border.

Are they the same as N.sylvestris, Lori? I'm growing these for the first time this year but they aren't in flower yet.

to be honest ladies your gues is as good as mine, it is only the lonely, i rescued it for B & Q the other day it was all bedraggled, dry as a bone, in the reduced shelf - i think it was 50P. so i gave it some tlc and a good long drink and he come back lovely for me. i doubt it is one of the tall varietys as it is only about 18" at the moment and seems to have quite a compact habit.

Hi... No..No...No..Yes. Only the Lonely is definitely the common name growers have given for the nicotiana sylvestris over here!! It is a lovely plant Spritzhenry and it has a wonderful perfume that seems more pronounced in the cool of the evening... a bit prone to aphids...sap is quite sticky. I'm sure too that the lovely little limeys that you have Majeeka are the dwarf var.. they have a pretty scent too but not as nice as the sylvestris...their colour makes up for that!... you got a wonderful bargain... I just found festuca glauca in 4" pots for 59cents...and thought I had done well...

LOL, oh Lori, silly me i thought when you said 'only the lonely' that you were referring to the fact that i only have one! lol which is why i said it was, did'nt realise that was a comon name for it! i have always know it as a tobaco plant! lol and yes i think you did get a bargain. Festuca glauca is a lovely plant, i had 5 of them in a mass planting last year and they were great. they did'nt flower, but this year after flowering they went all leggy and brown so i unfortuantely had to dig them out. i think they are maybe a biannual, rather than a perennal but defo worth every cent of the price you paid.

Too bad you had to dig them, mine started like that too...but I have five clumps that I've had for three years... and each year I comb through them to remove the dead stuff and give them a haircut when they put up the seed heads...

the problem was with mine there would have been nothing left after combing through, - it was all brown. never mind i planted a beautiful Heucchera in its place, and to be honest it does look better than the Festuca, so everything for a reason!
