I presume they wait till the fronds are dying back in Autumn, then shred them for Orchid growing medium.

it can get huge as in 8 feet but thats under optimum conditions and have to be over 10/15 years or more to get to those dizzy heights , I have seen them at Wisley huge specimens ... they like a moist situation all year with no drying out ...
I have had this one for about 4 years (in a pot and sits on a saucer I keep filled with water over the summer ) hasnt grown that much so I doubt this will go that big ...
