Piceas are pretty adaptable, Lori, they grow fine here on alkaline clay. This is a beauty.

Thanks Vincent! I really is a wonderful looking shrub. I have two of the conical picea (Alberta Spruce) they have had trouble with mites...but I've pruned and done some light shearing and there's nice new growth...fingers crossed!

Yes, it is very prone to mites, you can get an insecticide for spidermites, but I don't know of any organic remedy for them.

I tried giving them a shower! I used a mild soap and warm water in a spray bottle... saturated the tree...(I chose a dull day so the soap wouldn't dry on the needles...) gave it a few minutes to soak in ...then used the garden hose with a very weak spray...and hosed it down from top to bottom... it worked.. had to do the same thing on a mugho pine which was being consumed by sawfly larvae. I squished ...then I washed...lol.

Vincent & Lori - Nice to see the two of you having a private chat on my pages, no need for me to comment on a plant in my own garden then :o)

Oh pardon, Bluespruce...Please excuse ... I have the greatest enthusiasm for this lovely spruce! lol.... I'm also wondering where you placed it in your collection?

Only kidding Lori, 'Fahndrich' is in one of the smaller island beds, alongside the drive and close to the house.

I like that specimen! bright colour...and defined shape...great texture...is it fussy about pH? soil? drainage? light? looks like a terrific shrub for a Japanese theme.
