Japanese cherry plums... almost ready to eat!

Japanese cherry plums... almost ready to eat! (Prunus)

This is the first year we've had a huge crop of Japanese cherry plums from a tree I grafted in 2003 just before moving to France. I did an approach graft (where both the rootstock and existing tree continue to grow) in spring 2003 and by autumn the graft had taken. But this is the first year since planting it here that we've had a good crop. The rootstock was prunus cerasifera grown from seed.

We have harvested a huge number of lovely ripe cherry plums now and got there before the birds. But why is it in some years the birds take everything, and some years, like this, they seem to leave the fruit alone (just a couple were pecked, about five out of several hundred!) Last year the birds cleared the raspberries, black and red currants, and even ate the Japanese wineberries. Apart from the cherries which they always love, the bird damage has been minimal, yet there are plenty of blackbirds and thrushes around.

OOPS...I can see you ARE the cherry plum expert! These look wonderful
Amazing what a bit of good weather and a lot of knowledge can do obviously!

It's just the good weather. The Anjou region of France is known as the garden of France, bit like Kent. Though this is the only the second year (out of six) that we've had good crops of plums, cherries, and (hopefully later) peaches.
