I love the trunk on these palms.

Me too! I've been seeing them all over the place here, but I didn't know what they were called until now.

Dottydaisy2:

This is a small one...other parts of Balboa Park and San Diego Zoo have much larger Royal Palms.

Here's some other Royal Palm pics:

Glad I could help. :>)

I bet they're very large ones where you live. Royal Palms grow to about 65ft/19m tall here in San Diego's subtropical climate, however, in the tropics they can grow to 100ft/31m tall.

I haven't seen any of these ones that big yet, Delonix - or maybe I just haven't looked far enough up the trunks! I'll make it my mission :)

There are some quite spectacular Traveller's Palms, too - but I don't know the botanical name for them.

I'm sure there's most likely some approaching 100ft/31m tall, where you live.

I love traveller's palms also, I've posted several pics of them growing here in the past. The botanical name is: Ravenala madagascariensis. It is not a true palm.

Thanks Delonix :)
I bought three palm seedlings when I first got here (to put in pots). One is a fishtail, one I have no idea what variety (although maybe you could identify it if I post a picture?) and because it has suddenly grown, I've just realised that the third is actually a Royal Palm!

Given its rate of growth maybe it should be in a bigger pot! :))

If you post of pic of your palm, I may be able to identify it.

Royal palms do best in the ground. Pot-grown royal palms tend to not look so good after a while.

Fishtail palms are very common here. I especially like the humongous Caryota gigas (King Kong Fishtail Palm).

Here's some of my fishtail palm pics.

Thank you, Delonix, I will investigate! :)

I am moving to another house, with a garden next month and I will put it in the ground!

Once I am there, I may be bothering you often for lots of i.ds - if you don't mind...? The garden is already a little tropical paradise (if not a little overgrown) lol!

You can ask me to identify any plants, at any time...I do my best to id them. :>)

I know about overgrown. I have so many overgrown Ficus species...they grow so fast! Most are native to the Congo Region of Africa.

Thanks D...I move 1st Dec...be prepared! ;)
There are some huge Ficus here, Delonix...There's one just around the corner - I'll see if I can get a picture of it! :)

I'll be prepared. lol! :>)

I love Ficus species, however, most grow much too large for the urban garden. I've posted several pics of gigantic Ficus tree which take over gardens here.
