arum lily

arum lily (zantedeschia crowbourough)

this plant is next to my pond and has been there since we moved home 19 years ago and has gone from strength to strength ever since, we get about 60 flowers a year from what is now a very substantial clump, I also planted about a dozen offshoots in wet but heavily fed soil with about 2 barrow loads of garden compost behind the shed a couple of years ago, now they are individually producing quite a respectable amount themselves, so I'll extend the original clump further into the back garden which in deep shade in winter but sunny for most of the day in summer, the original plant was given to me many years ago by a plantsman who worked in a municipal garden when they were thinning out the arums in their greenhouse, when he visited my home many years later asked if we had lost the arum to our central heating, I told him it had never been in the house but had been planted in the garden since he gave me it he was very surprised because it was then regarded to be unsuitable for garden use as it was deemed to be too tender, in fact all I used to do, (if I remembered) was to chuck an old piece of sacking or carpet over it in the winter in fact most years it was left to its own ends, and somehow always seemed to recover in the spring

Hi Johndman

I like your blog, it would be really nice to see more of your garden, as I am passionate about gardening.

You are right about this plant, I have them all over the garden, some of them, I do not know how they got where they are. They are as tough as old boots, even in a dry area.
