Hen party part ii.

Well I have had the most wonderful afternoon in boiling hot sunshine in a back garden @ Denmark Hill, Sth.London, with tea & cake and four delightful hens. The course was brilliant, very informal, laid back & relaxed and the girls who ran it were great. We learnt all we needed to know about keeping hens and keeping them happy enough so they lay, Erica, the owner of the hens gets four eggs daily and has done ever since she has had them some three years now, even the cake, which was delicious, was made using their eggs ! I am so tempted to begin BUT still worried about our local foxes who when the sun shines lay on our lawn and sunbathe!!! I even think that they live beneath our neighbours decking. So they are too close for comfort. However Erica says she has had no trouble with foxes but takes all the usual precautions just in case. The chucks inspected our bags and ate the cake crumbs, what genial creatures they are. Mind you if like me and I do love my garden and my plants, you may have to consider that having a Matilda or an Agnes scratching around that you may have to not be quite so fussy ! !
Happy days.

What a lovely blog Grandmage. If I had known about it I would have offered to come with you. Camberwell is not too far from me. I to am thinking of keeping chickens. I am more worried what the council would say. Glad you had a lovely day. The sun was beautiful today. It is always nice to get a taster session when embarking on something so different as keeping hens. At least you know what what now.

Is your garden big enough to have a fenced area for them, to give protection from foxes? And to protect your plants from foraging!! I can understand your apprehension if the foxes actually sunbathe in your garden!!! That's bold...

I envy you Grandmage, i would love to keep chickens but just could not give up any part of my garden!!! it would break my heart.
My auntie used to have bantoms when i was a kid, i enjoyed nothing more than running down her garden and helping myself to those freshly laid eggs for breakfast - oh joy! Sadly they fell prey to the local foxes after so many years of constantly trying to keep them out.
There are more and more foxes these days, but i hope you give it a chance. Good luck!!
