Best gardening purchase ever......

Hello All

I was thinking the other day about how you get tons of use out of certain items you buy and only occasional use out of others. Whether it be an item of clothing (my tatty old dog walking coat with the best hood for keeping out wind and rain) or a gadget or something you use in the garden.

Well my star gardening item is the folding garden kneeler that my husband bought me; ostensibly to kneel on whilst tending to plants. I never actually kneel on it, it’s a bit uncomfortable for me but I use it all the time to sit on whilst I do stuff (you turn it upside down to use it as a seat).

It also lends itself to being a table if we are camping or just out and have a flask with us or if we’re sitting in the garden, say having some wine; it acts as a foot rest for me.

It cost about £6.00 I think and the amount of quality use I have had out of it knows no bounds and it’s still going strong!

What is your star gardening item?

I agree mine was £6 also,I bought it 15 years ago,and still going strong,I do use it for gardening all the time, but like you a table and stool, they are great.

This sounds very handy...Ii might get one! For me it has to be my Greenhouse. It allows me to garden all year around and potter on windy days when I don't like being outside.

A very close second is two bottle green folding chairs we bought to take camping; you know the type you see folks carrying to festivals?
They were £8.00 each and they are the most comfortable chairs ever! They are better than any other 'garden' chair we have ever had and we can take them anywhere - priceless.
They are currently getting a lot of use on the beach which is nearby; we carry them down to the beach (with a bottle of wine and glasses! I mention wine quite a bit; have you noticed?) and just listen to the sea whilst quaffing.......
bliss.

That's sounds lovely, sitting by the sea, having a glass of wine,my oh has not been well ,and he sat in one of those chairs, watering the garden with a hose pipe, were theres a will.

I have one of those and admit I use it lots although like you I rarely kneel on it, however my most favourite tool of all is the long handled fork, can stand on the path or the lawn anywhere and work amongst my plants without having to actually stand on the earth, best tool I have ever owned.....

I also have one of those things, and the seat part opens up so that you can store things in it, like secateures (can't spell that lol), twine etc
I always kneel on mine, because of my arthritic knees :)

The artificial grass covering the cracked concrete area where a caravan used to stand. It looks good ; is lovely and warm under one's feet when the sun shines ; and an excellent background for container plants.

You dis say "purchase"!

Hubby was saying that I need one of those. I have a dodgy knee ever since about 6 years ago my dog Ben ran into my knee. He was 43kg at the time and some stupid women had taken her in season bitch for a walk off lead down the woods. Ben was trying to get to her and went straight through me. I then dropped to the ground. This women then walked off leaving me there in middle of woods sitting on the ground holding my knee.Knee has never been the same since and if I'm kneeling I need to hold on to something to get back up. My favourite garden purchased gadget is my long handled leaf grabber. Makes clearing up in Autumn so much easier and quicker. :-).

|Our son has just given me a set of two tools- one a pavior weeder and one a very pointed one with measurements on it which I assume is for planting bulbs. But its wonderful for weeding in hard ground - I took it out for a test run this morning and got a bit carried away - looks as though it might become the sort of tool you carry around with you whatever you're doing - in just a few minutes it had dealt with a young blackthorn sucker and two seedling brambles (so many this year!) plus the usual odds and ends of course. Its more accurate than the round ended ones and you can get more pressure on the point. So it might just become a favourite though i do love my stainless steel fork amd spade set too.

Oh Jen you poor thing, get one of those kneelers they are great, you can lean on them to help you up and down,I could not do with out mine.I have not seen the leaf grabbers, just going to google it they sound what I need.

They are brilliant Callie. I still rake leaves into a pile but then using leaf grabber means I don't have to mend down. Just hold the handles together and then can carry straight to the bin. Last year I still had my cherry tree and it had canker so had to bin all the leaves as didn't want to chance it. Chopped it down this year so hopefully can rot the leaves down this year to go onto the garden.

Thanks Jen,just what I need.

I really don't know what my fav think is.
I rarely kneel on my kneeler as my girls bought me knee pads and they are pretty good.

I had one bought for me many years ago and I thought 'Blimey, I'm not that old that I need such a thing' I took it to the charity shop, but blimey, years later do I need a kneeler like hell I do, lol

That does sound brilliant and like I could use one. I was out in the garden today and had to crawl across the lawn to lean on a garden chair to get up as I couldn't do it on my own.

I love my extendable handled cutter things that I bought recently. There is so much chopping things to do in my very overgrown garden and they are invaluable. I got the dearer ones because they can cut up to 3.8cm instead of the cheaper ones that can only do up to 2.5cm. Really glad I got the bigger ones. They also work like a ratchet so you don't have to do the whole thing in one go but they are so good they cut like a hot knife through butter.

I wish I'd had them at my last place instead of half killing my back taking about half an hour to get through one branch of my rosemary bush (which had grown into more like a little tree) If I could go back to that now it would take all of 5 minutes to do the whole thing :D

Loupylou I got mine kneeler from a charity shop - but I don't think it was yours!

Mine has to be our hammock. We were given it from a friend forty years ago and it was pretty old then, but we paint it every two years and we love it.

Hello All

I'm sorry to be so tardy reading about your favourite or most useful gardening gadgets! It's funny how answering a question like that automatically gives you more information about the person who owns it; if you know what I mean?

I particularly like the sound of your artificial grass Eirlys; I was wondering about having some on the floor of my shed as a kind of garden inspired carpet!

Hope your OH is better now Callie1914

I don't know if I should have started a new thread with this thought but I decided to just put it here amongst the really useful gardening gadgets.

So here goes folks - do any of you have a leaf blower/hoover and what do you think about them?

We have been getting lots of leaves already and they are actually staining our brand new patio quite markedly so I'm thinking of getting one.
I think - no I know - that I will be far more eager to go out and 'hoover' the garden than I ever would to hoover in the house!

22 Aug, 2017

I've seen people use the blowers and I wonder what the point is unless they sweep it up afterwards.

I reckon the novelty would wear off just like with a vacuum cleaner or a lawnmower :D

22 Aug, 2017

Hi Pamelaanne

I thought that too until I read up on one that's for sale in a mag; a lot of them suck up the leaves too and then shred them, so they can go straight onto your composter.

Small things amuse me and I know I will be considerably amused going 'hoovering' in the garden....
However as you say, it's a considered purchase and I don't want the novelty to wear off and it sits there unused. That's why I thought I would ask other folks who've posted on here if they had any experience of them.

23 Aug, 2017

We bought a leaf blower/vac and I was full of enthusiasm as we have a lot of path and a lot of leaves to sweep up. But the snag for me was I am not tall enough and the vac bag catches on the ground too much. OH is not into sweeping up so I am still pushing the broom around.

23 Aug, 2017

Thank you for that Steragram

Good point; I'm not exactly tall and willowy so I may have to consider the size of the machine to see if I will be able to operate it properly.....

Holly, we have just bought some artificial grass for our gazebo (posh tent). We sit in there quite a lot and the ground under our feet was becoming "worn". A piece 3mx2m cost around £45 and is earning its keep. It's lovely underfoot and gets warm in the sun. Sage, our cat, loves lying on it.

Thank you Hollyduff
