This was so fascinating I have checked it out in my wildlife book (just redicovered it this morning when I was having a sort out!). I think it is Araneus quadratus. The blurb says 'mature females can appear grotesquely swollen and almost spherical. Adults seen from June-October. Female much larger than the male'. It also comments on the four spots. Great photo, Jacque.

Oh I love spiders (and hate flies). My mum was scared of them and I copied her util one day I just thought 'why?' Now I love them and treat the house spiders as pets. Love them, they do no harm and are fascinating to watch.

I have a friend who came home to find a spider on her porch, she stayed in the yard for hours waiting for her husband to get home because she wouldn't walk past it. Same person is not a bit afraid of snakes.

Just been looking at your obese spider and thought it was called Spud, but then realised it is a girl carrying a sac full of babies, and she may be called Cynthia. Not certain, but once I disturbed quite a lot of them whilst cutting a conifer hedge and suddenly there were minute spiderlings everywhere. I stopped cutting!
