My allotment

It has been a lovely sunny day here today, it is a great pleasure to go down to the allotment where it is so peaceful just to potter around and have a chat to all the other allotmenteers, it is also nice to get someone to come up to you for tips on gardening, although there is a lot of work that needs to be done around the hedgerows to keep the nettles down, we have our own strimmers which are owned by our allotment society which we all hope that will keep the rents down on the plots by the council.

Your allotment sounds a nice and friendly place. I'm pleased to hear you enjoy it :o)

Your Assn. will probably put the rents up if too much water is used. Your Council should have damaged wheelie bins to give you to collect water in the winter months.

Bit confused as to why rents should go up if you use too much water. Not much point having an allotment without water.
When I water down my allotment I get through 200 litres at a time which is a lot of wheelie bins.

Look out Scrumpygrat - when they read the meters and the bills come in they will be after you for more rent.
Our rents were doubled because they hadnt got enough money to pay the water bill, they left it doubled so they had some in hand for 2012, it rained all summer and nobody used any water. 2013 Rent was still double, I cant put up with the vandalism so have left now.

The water is not a problem on the site it is the local council that own the allotments that put up the rents, our only problem is like Dianebulley we have had a little vandalism but the police have now started to go down at intervals to keep an eye on things, at the moment it seems to be working, since they have put up there notices around the site, we are hoping eventually that the site will be fenced off when the developers start on the building site by the allotments.
We have a very good committee of which I am a member, our treasurer is a fantastic chap who does a lot of work for our site, two years ago the secretary put in for a grant which we manage to get and so the treasurer went out a bought a steel container that we use for a shop and he goes to the wholesalers and gets all the fertilisers, seed potatoes, and various things that we use on the allotment. I with another member of the committee do the strimming around the hedge row just to keep the site tidy as we have a contractor that comes about three times a year to cut the grass on the walkways but he does not do any strimming , we are hoping that the council will soon have all the grass walkways changed and have pathways made up with the black fleece and wood chip, which will save on the cost of the contractor and hopefully keep the rents down.
I will at some time in the future put up some photo's of our site for you all to see.

Welcome to Goy John. You are fortunate in your allotment society owning its own strimmers! Nettles - well look on the bright side - you'll get good compost from them..
Tried nettle soup once as its very good for you, but not the sort of thing I wanted to do again.
