It is three years since my son first showed me how to use a computer. It was one of the best things I did. I don’t know how he put up with me since it took me so long to get the hang of it . His patience and my effort we got there in the end. Just when I taught I had it mastered the laptop went funny on me. So I had to get it to a technician for repair, lucky I had some of my files saved onto a external hard drive. One week later the laptop came back with everything wiped clean off it but fixed. It cost 65.00 euro, I taught that’s not too bad considering, except some of my files were gone and I said to myself I could live with that. One week later “bang” laptop gone again and off I went back to the repair man note I did not call him technician. No joy said the computer man after him so called fixing it and down 65.00 euro :-(.
The weather was so cold but not as bad as the UK, No gardening, no walk, worst of all no laptop. When I seen the weather forcast for the foreseeable week “hands on top of my head”. What the hell am I going to do for the week… So I ran out the door off to PC World and when I got there I nearly died when I seen the price. A big sign said SPECIAL OFFER laptop 15.5" Toshiba 350.00 Euro not knowing much about computers or should I say laptops I didn’t know if this was good or not. I knew it had to be better than what I didn’t have at the moment… The old laptop was 15.5" 2mg memory and the new laptop was 15.5" 4.4mg memory. Then I seen another Toshiba laptop which had 6mg memory so I decided on that one. It cost 400.00 euro, I was so excited and could not wait to get home to set it up. I had it opened in a flash when I got back, switched it on and what a lovely bright screen staring back at me, then I paused what the hell do I do next ha ha!!!I rang my son shouting down the phone to him HELP!! poor fella didn’t know what to say as I hadn’t a clue how to use this laptop. It had the new windows 8 on it which totally knocked me back, don’t like new changes in technology when it took me 3 years to get used to one.
The other difference is great I seem to be bouncing my fingers off this keyboard so you will have to excuse all my mistakes I make for another 3 years ha ha!!!!!!!!!!

well done John, none of us like change I think it frightens us, but you were very brave to venture out and treat yourself, if not you would have just been wasting money on repairs. I have a new touch phone, it almost went out of the window a few days ago but today I have set it up to email, so now all emails into my phone, glad your son is so patient, he sounds a good lad, and I am pleased you are back on line again. you will be forgiven for any mistakes you do, enjoy your new laptop, x

I am lucky have found a technician locally (£30 an hour) who is very good, he took my computer home, and wiped all the rubbish off the C. drive. Cost me £60 but worth every penny. Having a new 'C' disc would have been an extra £75 and wasnt necessary.
I have now learned to ignore that little note on the right hand side of the screen which says ' Updates are ready etc' They are only adverts.
Suggest you do the same. These automatic updates are what may have blocked your first computer 'C' drive and caused the trouble.
I only save what I want on the 'C' drive.
Have also found a very clever local lady £30 an hour. She says 'they' are changing the technology every week, so I have learned to be patient.
Its a good idea to find these people before trouble starts, then they know you and will come when you need them.
Good luck.

I'm still getting used to the new one I had in November , so you're going to do better than that , Johnjoe .
It is a lovely bright screen too , and Windows 8 to boot !

oooh a new lap top ~ have fun johnjoe!! how brilliant! i love those shiny bright screens ~ photos look so fantastic on those screens.

I know just what you mean,Johnjoe..as my trusty old laptop had to be replaced after 4 years,,it had a new screen fitted, and it went again, before Christmas..so my
daughters partner advised me which one to get..well,he got it for me..and set it up..I wouldn't have had a clue..I am more or less used to it now,but loading photo's from my camera,is nowhere near as easy as before..and I still don't feel at ease with it,..even though I have it written down..I agree, most of us don't like change..especially as we get older..but on the other hand,it feels so good when you have mastered something..and we are up there with the whizz kids..well,almost :o))..Good luck,it looks a nice laptop..Mine is a very clear shiny screen too..much better on the eyes :o)

Sorry John I should have put - if it says ' Click here to access updates' - dont click.
If it says ' Automatic updates are ready for your computer now ' delete.

Whichever way, dont accept them. They take up the megabytes on your 'C' drive which is what blocks it.

Dont have anything you dont need saved on 'My Documents' which also takes up 'C' drive space.

Thank you Yorkshire, Pamg, Draid, Sticktoffee, Dianebully, Bloomer, for your good advice and encouragement

Ain't technology fun, JJ.
You'll be interested to know that when this latest laptop goes kaput you'll have all this fun to look forward to again.
New innovations make all gadgets 'obsolete' within 18 months, I kid you not!
Bells & whistles, what would we do without them? Lol.
Glad you're back in the thick of it, anyway.

8 Apr, 2013

Thanks Mouldy, I will look forward to that just like a sore thumb, Lol

I've only had my new android phone for about a month, but it's already in need of 2(!!!) upgrades.
Saw a friend using the same sort of phone as my old one & try as I might...I just couldn't recall how it worked.
Amnesia in 4 weeks! Lol.
You'll get the hang of your new laptop in next to no time.

I'm on my third computer now in just eight years, you will get use to it John, getting the hang slightly of the new phone, can now receive emails but I don't know how to send them.

11 Apr, 2013

Is it because of the new set-up with Outlook , Yorks ?

11 Apr, 2013

What are you doing Yorkshire, three computers. Your a expensive woman to keep,,, Lol. By the way, we are still waiting let you know when I here something.

11 Apr, 2013

Poor you Jj, but you do have a shiny new machine. My pc is 6 years old and boasts a gruesome untangleable tangle of wires, so I keep thinking about buying a laptop. I'm not as brave as you though and, to tell the truth, have become rather sentimentally attached to the devil I know .... ok .... I admit it ... I chicken out:-))

11 Apr, 2013

Yes B/A, I know what you mean I was the same with the old computer it was a hand me down if you know what I mean. it was a good few Years old and starting to cost on repairs. I was sentimental about it, and very attached to 400 euro well the 400 euro had to go, and along came the new shiny computer. Only for my son I would have never got it going. Now I am slowly getting the hang of it, wow there is so much more on it for me to play around with. Every day is an adventure

12 Apr, 2013

Driad no not because of outlook, the first one just died on me then two, three years ago I bought another one, that did not last long the mother board went in it so I had no choice but to go out and buy another one, the thing is these machines are not cheap are they, I hope this one does not pack in on me my husband will have a fit, Lol

12 Apr, 2013

Eh up Yorky, why do you want emails on your phone?:-)
Johnjo, I hope that doesn't mean you're cancelling our cruise so you can have adventures with your new machine?:-( I've been so looking forward to it and Yorky has been and gone and had a face lift in case she meets that handsome lieutenant again ....of course, as you know, my skin is like a twenty year olds:-)))))

12 Apr, 2013

I've gone all posh with the new phone, I can sit in the evening and read emails from the comfort of my lounge and not have to go to the computer. as for the face lift, I need more than that Ba, as for John don't worry about the cruise he has a lap top so he can bring it with him on the cruise. everything is under control Dear.

12 Apr, 2013

Goodo, I really need that cruise. Did you know that Bloomer was our resident plastic surgeon? Perhaps we should have a little chat with her ....I know she takes inches off bottoms ...perhaps we could have them injected into our faces etc? ..... perhaps not:-(

12 Apr, 2013

Hey , you two , I must have missed this rivalry between you ; if it's cruises we're on , you're not going without me .
Where are we going , and when ? I'll start the diet !

12 Apr, 2013

Gosh Val, your very posh, to have to have a lounge all I have is a sitting room. The only time I get to sit in a lounge is when I go on a sailing cruse. :-)

12 Apr, 2013

Driad, you'll have to look at Johnjo's blogs or pics to find out about the cruise. There's a couple of pics in August 2012 showing the ship and the crew:-)

12 Apr, 2013

It is a very posh lounge,Driad,I've seen it..but she lives in a posh area, unlike me living in a small bungalow..we only have a front room :o)..and if you want to know about me being a plastic surgeon..with a lethal saw, look at Ba's comment on my recent Crassula pic..all will become clear..I think ! Lol.

12 Apr, 2013

no problem Driad you can come on the cruise with John BA and me, Oh keep your hands off John he is all mine, O.K. Bloomer talk about POSH, you've seen nothing, its all been decorated and a new three piece suite, now this is what you call POSH. Driad take a look at Johns August 2012 pictures like BA says you'll see what we are cruising on, Oh yer I nearly forgot, the Lieutenant is mine also. I like Greed.

13 Apr, 2013

Now that IS posh,Yorky..have you been bribing Ralph with the promise of more pasties? Lol.

13 Apr, 2013

No need to bribe him Sandra, I'm just spoilt

14 Apr, 2013

great isn't it? :o)

14 Apr, 2013

Hope its not this windy for your cruise, there's waves on the pond fit to sink a battleship.......

That sailingship is a beauty ........who's destined for the crows nest?

14 Apr, 2013

That is B/A, job she has the loudest voice to warn us about danger approaching.

14 Apr, 2013

glad you said that about BA and not me,

14 Apr, 2013

When she sees this Johnjoe you'll hear her across the sea to Ireland. :0)

14 Apr, 2013

Hi , folk , I just love all the would be "goings-on" from August , I don't know how I missed all the fun .
Are we going to piped aboard on the next voyage , Johnjoe , you are in charge of arrangements .
We'll have to splice the mainbrace , you know .

14 Apr, 2013

Now look here Jj, you know I have no head for heights, maybe I could look out from the poop deck? I've no idea what that is, but I just like the sound of it. As to me having a voice like a foghorn, it's only you I have to shout at because you keep stringing us beauties along with your promises of cruises and the like. If I didn't know better Jj, I would think you were a bit of a philanderer. Anyway I've decided to stick to Ralphies legs from now on:-)

14 Apr, 2013

I am the same so now my grandson can access my pc from his home remote share access view , where he can connect to my pc or phone and fix any thing from his pc from his home to my pc or phone, perhaps your son could do the same and set it for you, which will save him keep having to travel to your house. When it connects you have to accept.
