Quite scared...

I got a call from my new neighbour, along the road, this afternoon…"Help! He has fallen through four metres!

I called the emergency numbers and they arrived, quickly, lots of them, and took him to hospital…

…but, now, hours later, my wee girl has gone with his wife…to Angoulême…in my car…

I’m scared because I shouldn’t have let them go…

It was the right thing to do and they will be ok Karen. Can you arrange for her to stay somewhere over night perhaps so she does not drive back on her own tonight?

21 Aug, 2012

I think they will have to come back to my house, Denise...

...which I don't mind at all...as long as Kitkat is okay...(which is what worries me)...

21 Aug, 2012

She will be fine Karen. How far is it?

21 Aug, 2012

It's 50 kilometers, Denise...

...and the wife was really distraught...
...and, thinking that I knew the system, I thought that she wouldn't be called until tomorrow...

21 Aug, 2012

Hopefully they have arrived now and she will phone you?
Once you have spoken to her and persuaded her to go get something to eat you will both feel better.

21 Aug, 2012

They will have arrived by now, Denise...
...but neither of them have phones which work here, which means we can't speak...

...they'll be okay, though........

21 Aug, 2012

Of course they will and surely the hospital will let them use the phone at some stage.

I hope everything is all right now Karen.
It can be a worrying time when situations like that arise. I panic at the leats thing, but things are not usually as bad as they seem.
It was kind of Denise to be there for you. Sometimes we need reassurance.

My neighbour was very lucky...he fell through the rotten upstairs floor of their mill...but will only have a back brace for a few weeks...

Phew!!!

Now...what do you do with a very mobile one year old, when you haven't had much sleep...? :)

22 Aug, 2012

Thats a relief Karen, so glad all is well. I remember that feeling they are never still are they.

22 Aug, 2012

Thanks J...we're all just a bit jaded this morning, thank goodness. x

It's all just coming back to me now, Denise...siestas all around this afternoon, I think... :)

22 Aug, 2012

Thats a good idea, sleep helps - when you can get it lol.
I remember how scared I was last year, when I could not contact my daughter during the London riots she had locked herself out while putting out rubbish with no phone no money she had to cross London to stay with friends.

22 Aug, 2012

your neighbour was very lucky,Karen..glad he is going to be ok...and they got back home safely...re the one year old...sleep when they sleep! :o) Ours won't have his afternoon nap anymore at our house,so we now go back to theirs after lunch..he has no problem in his own bed...2 hours mainly...yippee....cracked it :o)

Glad everything has worked out ok Karen, its nervewrecking when you are the one having to sit and wait for news..
Another plus for Goy and its members, there`s always someone out there to offer comfort when needed..

22 Aug, 2012

I don't think I've understood exactly what went on but am relieved to hear that all is now well. As for one year olds - exhausting, but wonderful.

Hi everyone!

I remember when that happened, Denise. That was a really frightening situation to be in. I would have been frantic. I hate mobile phones but, sometimes, they have their uses...and when you can't get through, it's even worse.

I didn't get that snooze, yesterday afternoon, Bloomer - but Ruaridh and Kitkat did. My step-daughter borrowed our big car and so I had to take my neighbour up to the hospital to visit her husband in my little car. One fractured vertebra...but he's looking a lot better...thank goodness...Maybe today - if I don't have to go back to the hospital!

Thank you Jess, Karen, Scottish and Tuesday Bear. It was all very dramatic at the time. Ruaridh had actually hidden the house phone and I had only just found it and charged it when I got the call...!

Thank you Lincs. You're so right about it being nerve-wracking...and about GoY. There are some lovely people here and there is always someone around to give support...

...Thank you everyone! x

(Now back to normal toddler exhaustion...I've got the sofa booked for this afternoon! lol!)

23 Aug, 2012

Thats better news, I hope you get to use the sofa.

23 Aug, 2012

Gosh your neighbour had someone looking out for him, that could have been so much worse, hope you are rested up now..

You won't believe this, but, yesterday I was driving into town with K and R in the car. Anna had rung to say that someone else was taking her to the hospital. The road is really narrow with ditches on both sides, so when I saw a white transit van coming towards us at a terrific speed, I slowed right down to pull over. But, he kept on and hit my wing mirror with such force that it exploded into the car.

I got out and ran after him...and he finally decided to stop...

I was shouting at him (I've never shouted at anyone in the street before) and he said...

"I'm very sorry if that was my fault...I'm going to see a friend...she's in a terrible state...her husband has had an accident and has broken his back...I'll give you money now..."

I said, "It certainly was your fault and you will pay for the repairs, when they are done...and I happen to know exactly how both of them are...and that is no excuse for almost putting three more people in hospital!"

Kitkat has a few little cuts but other than that they are both okay...

But, the car is full of glass so today will be spent hoovering and chasing around to get it repaired...

...no rest for the wicked, eh...?

24 Aug, 2012

Goodness Karen what an awful thing to happen. He is lucky not to be done for that. Relieved you are all ok.

24 Aug, 2012

Oh good gracious! What a foolish man!
And why is it always 'white van men'

are the children ok about going back in the car, such a shock for you all xxx

24 Aug, 2012

Oh dear,Karen..what a week you are having..so glad you are all ok..and hope that stupid man has learnt his lesson..we have lots of narrow roads here too..and so many near misses..my daughter pulled in for another guy,a few weeks ago..he didn't..and scratched her newish car along the side...they exchanged Tel numbers...but he gave her a false one! ..She regrets not taking a pic of his number plate, with her phone..but was more concerned about Thomas in the back ...:o(..

24 Aug, 2012

You would be Bloomer,
I,d also be concerned that he may see me do it

I heard of an incident when a guy fell off his bike at a pedestrian crossing, the woman got out of her car to help and the accomplice stole her handbag

24 Aug, 2012

You certainly having one of those weeks aren't you!!!
Thank goodness you are all ok - probably the shouting did you world of good - a sort of release once you realised your daughter and grandson were ok.
I do hope your weekend is less eventfull for you :))

24 Aug, 2012

My god karen, I have just read this. It's almost surreal. What do you do out there for fun? When you're not having major, traumatic life incidents that is. So glad you and your neighbour are okay. Jx

24 Aug, 2012

Hi everyone!

Denise and Pam, I think he was worried about being done...and if it had been any worse, I would have called the gendarmes. White van drivers are a law unto themselves.

Like the guy who gave your daughter a false number, Bloomer, he probably doesn't have any insurance. Lots of Brits here don't bother to get French plates, because it costs around €500. But, after 12 months the insurance companies refuse to continue insure the vehicle...hence, the offer of cash on the spot.

Luckily, when he said where he was going, I knew that I could get him...and Anna said that he was quite shaken...probably by being accosted by a small, furious woman shouting at him in French.

I was quite proud of the tirade I managed to produce, by the way, Scottish...I didn't know I had it in me! He just stood there and asked if I could speak English. I said yes and gave it all to him over again! lol!

Lol! Jane, I live in one of the most uneventful places in the world...and I'm looking forward to a nice, normal, quiet weekend...

...I've organised the loan of a little car for Anna, so that she can get around independently...her husband is getting home today...and the new wing mirror for my car is on order...

...peace at last...! :))) xxx

25 Aug, 2012

Good grief Karen, what a time you've had! So pleased it's all over now:-)

25 Aug, 2012

Hi Ba...and thanks :)
...I'm so not used to all this hectic activity...lol!

26 Aug, 2012

With one thing and another Karen you could do with some peace and quiet.......

26 Aug, 2012

What a lot of unneeded drama for you, Karen! Thank goodness you are all ok. It never rains but it pours, as they say. Certainly true here!!

26 Aug, 2012

Oh my word, Karen, I've only just picked up on this. What a terrible time you've been having. I'm sure no-one could have coped better than you did. When faced with situations that call for a lot of shouting, I find my Italian deserts me completely - you must be really good to shout in French. Why did whitevanman ask you to say it again in English?
It's amazing how you can find inner reserves of strength and common sense and competence when the situation arises. Good for you, Girl!
Bloomer, sadly, nothing surprises me about people and their sh***y underhand behaviour. I carry a camera with me wherever I go, but I'm darned certain I'd forget to use it in the heat of the moment, and the camera on my 'phone is fairly useless.
p.s. I'm a bit confused. Why did Kitkat have to go with Anna to the hospital?
