Since moving to Rwanda I have taken an interest in gardening and love experimenting with a variety of plants and flowers.

It's a challenge to grow anything here (even local plants) as pests are a huge problem but I refuse to use pesticides for fear of killing all the butterflies, bees and dragonflies that visit often.

The soil is also very poor and even after truck loads of manure and top soil, I struggle to get some things to grow well. Sometimes plants just start to look really bad and that's when I go a bit mad and cut everything back. The results are not always as expected (we have 2 hot dry seasons and 2 cold wet seasons) and when I prune, I take a gamble and hope for the best.
