Snow Drops : a spring bonus

This is being a remarkably good year for snow drops, although it is said that they are later than usual. My attempts to spread snow drops around my garden are gradually yielding results. For several years I’ve transplanted them in the green and they are slowly forming clumps.

Mind you, my garden efforts are eclipsed by the wonderful displays in the church yard of St Botolphs’ at Swyncombe.

Here generations of snow drops fill half of the grave yard where they are preceded by aconites, now fading. During February the church yard and the gardens of neighbouring Swyncombe House are opened on Sundays for tea and snow drops.

It isn’t necessary to make a Sunday trip, however, as there are plenty of snow drops in the wild as well. There is a lovely patch on one of our walks, where they are clustered among leaf fall, which makes a perfect background for the clumps of white flowers.

Snow drops are one of the early joys of spring, and even when the sun isn’t shining (which seems to have been mostly the case for weeks), they brighten the garden and provide a promise that even after a harsh winter, things in the garden will be just fine.
