That four-letter word - SNOW!

Well, it’s December 12th and we’ve had our first “snowfall” of the year. Yes, it’s a piddling amount of snow by just about anybody’s standards, but remember that I live in the Deep South. We aren’t accustomed to it here; we’re more likely to suffer from ice storms than snow. When most people think of Georgia they think about “Gone With the Wind” and Savannah, moss dripping from the trees and lazy rivers and all that. Not here – it’s way colder since we are at about 1200’ elevation. It’s horrible outside – very cold and very windy. Like a lot of people, I have a heat pump, which means that if the temperature drops much below freezing, I have no heat. Time to break out the space heaters. Since the low on Tuesday is forecast to be only 15 degrees, I expect I’ll be freezing! Here are some photos of our storm that sent everybody into a panic and rushing to the store for milk and bread.

Thankfully, I only have to work Monday and Tuesday of this week and can then hibernate at home until Saturday. It’ll have warmed up by then.

Sorry to hear you had snow. We had some aswell but not much. It didn't last long, and I hope yours doesn't either. It's horrible isn't it. I hope your heating continues to work.

This fall of snow is what I could have coped with, but as I live in the Northeast there was loads of the horrible stuff.Watching the news this morning I see some parts of America have had heavy snow.

Ice storms, seen one of those on the tv, horrific - I know we're all moaning about a bit of snow and ice, but thank heavens we don't get ice storms here. 15 degrees, Lauram, that's a summer's day here...

Hi Lauram....its comes as a shock if your not used to it doesnt it.....We have a taste most years and it still comes as a shock Lol....Keep warm....

It's miserable here. It's so cold that last night I got home from work and just went straight to bed with a book. I just got dressed for work and I'm wearing 3 shirts, a sweater and a vest, plus 3 pair of pants and my famous red, yellow and green fleece turtle hat that everybody laughs at. Heat is working but barely. At least the snow is gone but now the Weather Channel says rain mixed with snow and sleet for tomorrow. Lovely.

Its grim here too about 2 deg C and grey, damp and dismal.....
I went into town yesterday 'christmas shopping' and that was grim too-- never again.....

It's not a laughing matter for me when it gets cold! I hate freezing winter, and I wear nearly exactly the same as you do, Laura, dressing in several layers of clothing (but a little bit less than you do) :p I can't live without 'longjohns' in winter LOL :o) Let's keep warm!!!

I don't have to work today so I just ventured out to walk my dog & assess the damage.
Some areas had record low temps - Atlanta was at 15 F - but we were down to about 8 F here.
Everything is dead. My hardy ferns, everything, flat dead & brown. They will come back. But it was still a little shocking to see. I thought last winter was bad but this is worse by far. And all the long-range forecasts predicted a warmer and drier season. I think I'll eat some cake now and cry.

seems we're an ocean apart Lauram but all in the same boat-- the forecast here is 'the worst snow for 100 years'-- I really hope they are exagerating :~((((

Pamg, I think "grim" might really be the most apt word to use. I went shopping today also, not for gifts, just errands, and there was so much nastiness in the air. I understand that it's a week before Christmas but the shoving and griping and general irritability of the people around me made me want to stay in bed until after New Year's. Couldn't they just be happy that it was 50 degrees and not 28.

18 Dec, 2010

Sadly not exaggerating, Pamg - we had a blizzard yesterday, and it snowed for 6 hours today - nothing's moving anywhere, the A40 behind me stopped completely by about 4 pm, poor people, just sitting there in their vehicles for hours in temperatures which remained below zero all day...

Bamboo, you poor thing. 6 hours! Last week I read that quite a few people in upstate New York were stuck on the highway overnight in their cars during a blizzard. I don't think I can imagine anything more horrific. We had some ice Thursday & I didn't think anything of it since I didn't have to go anywhere, but when I went out later to pick up Chinese takeout I saw that a few cars had skidded off the road at some point overnight or in the morning. I have 4-wheel drive so I'm really not worried so much about snow, but ice is another story.

the souths really getting it bad again Bamboo because the snow came from the west all we have at the moment is a light dusting and -7 deg. when it comes from the east is when we suffer, the twice we've been really snowed in for a week is when it comes from the east with a strong drifting wind
take care both of you and just hope it clears soon xxx

NO more snow today, but it's not going anywhere - outside with another neighbour today clearing the entrance path to the main door (I live in a block of flats) and throwing salt down, but the pavements are still lethal... not to mention our car park.
