To Add Insult To Injury

As the old saying goes, " I need this like I need a hole in the head ". I tripped over a trellis which I had laid flat in the garden a short while ago which caused me to strain the achilles tendon in my left leg. while nursing this mishap, I decided to do a little sit-down gardening. while gathering up some garden rubble around me I felt like the lit end of a cigarette was shoved into my left ankle. Near my foot I saw a large wolf spider running off. A small red spot was left on my leg where the spider bit me. Within the next several hours the burning increased and a large ulcer developed from tissue destruction from the spider venom. Since the wound was deepening I called my physician who I visited this afternoon and was placed on Augmentin antibiotic to prevent secondary infection. As soon as I feel better I am going out to buy a pair of Wellingtons:)

Here is the wound that this nasty spider gave me…

that is nasty loosestrife. lets hope you heal quickly. we also get wolf spiders here in the UK but I've never seen bite reactions like this. in fact one of the worst spiders for biting is a little jumping spider.

I get badly bitten by ants in my garden and my skin reacts but thankfully not like your poor leg.

The wolf spiders we have have in the US have a venom that kills cells which cause deep ulcer like wounds. The lesson here is to not delay in seeking medical attention. A local dentist in my area did not do that when bitten by one of these and his delay almost cost him his leg. The wound is an entry way for a serious secondary infection. Sorry for the pictures but I decided to use them for two purposes. First, should the wound get worse my next step would be to go to the hospital. These images would give them a comparison on how fast the damage was progressing and second, an illustration of what happens in these occurrences in my blog. These wolf spiders by the way are very large ones and deliver plenty of venom in their bites.

Ooh gosh, you'll understsnd why I didn't tick like!

Not had anything as awful as yours, agree the red ant bite is extremly painful ,am I right they inject an acid?

Bees and wasps can be nasty too , I get a reaction to something that bites my ankles and makes my leg swell, anthistan is something I keep handy

I really hope it clears up asap, it looks awfully sore

That looks ghastly and I am sorry that it happened to you.

I do hope that you recover quickly from this, and yes, please buy those wellingtons!

Poor Loosestrife, you really are in the wars lately. Knowing nothing about wolf spiders I spent a little time googling and was very relieved to find out that the ones we get in the UK are a lot smaller than the US variety!

I hope you get no complications from the bite and that it heals up quickly.

Oh dear! I "liked" this because it is a cautionary tale, and I am glad to hear that you sought prompt treatment. It makes me shudder, though!

Thank you all for your comments and kind thoughts. At present the bite wound has gotten a bit larger in diameter and much deeper. It is down to the subcutaneous fat layer and I won't show you a picture of that unless one of you has a curiosity to see it. More venomous destruction has occurred than I had expected and I am busy keeping the wound clean and am taking my antibiotic and pain medication. A wound care specialist was consulted and I was told that this type of spider bite is going to take about three to six months to heal barring any complications. "O" yes, this can be seen as an object lesson. I always wore garden gloves but never thought of Wellingtons serving the dual role of protection from mud and nasty critters that bite. With this wound I won't be able to wear them for a while so my alternative would be to go to a western (cowboy) clothing store and buy a pair of chaps to wear. While there I might get a ten gallon Stetson hat to wear to keep the sun off of my head:) Sorry, but imagining myself gardening in that getup makes me laugh which I need to do right now.

Horrendous! Glad you can still laugh - if you go for the chaps and stetson we will want a photo...

Gives me an idea Stera I'll get a double holstered gun belt. One holster for a six gun to do in the garden varments and in the other holster a spray gun of weed killer. Oh! I think that the venom has gotten to my brain, sorry.
