I’ve just joined the group so I thought I would introduce myself.

I have been gardening in pots on a 2nd story deck for several years until I could get a ground-floor, deer-proof space constructed. The plan was to do a hoop house so that I could just throw plastic over the fencing for the winter. Unfortunately, that plan will have to be put off for a bit. However, my husband and I have talked about fencing in the bottom of the deck space to create a cat-run. So that’s what I did this summer.

I am using the square-foot gardening method (sort of) in oak half-barrels. Since everything took longer than I hoped, I wasn’t able to get my summer crops in early enough to actually get results but I’ve put the seedlings in place anyway. With the changing climate I might get something and I will get an idea of what works and doesn’t work. The cats enjoy being outside and spend most of their time out there. We’ll see how that changes when the rains come.

We have a large, un-molested-by-deer bed of lavender in a flower-bed next to the house that seem to keep the bees happy and we provide feeders for the hummingbirds so most of the plants in the garden areas are for food and flavor and medicine. Of course, I have to be careful that the plants that are harmful to cats are out of their reach. Yeah, good luck with that.
