Happy St Patricks Day

Happy St Paddies Day to you all. There are few of us in this part of the world who do not have an affiliation, however remote with Ireland. Myself, I am fortunate to be one of the many! My Grandaddy on my Mothers side was a Cork Man and my Grandmother a Dublin girl. On my Fathers side, my Grandaddy was from Dublin and so was my Grandmother. My Mother was born in Kildare. Mine was the first generation to be born in England. I remember my Grandaddy on my Mothers side particularly well, he was a tall man, always a pipe in his mouth and he spoke Gaelic most of the time..it was of course, his native language. He was a funny old so and so, and took great delight in teasing his many grandchildren. He would remove his glass eye, put it on the table and tell us not to move as he was watching us, and then leave the room! We would sit there silent and good until he returned and popped it back in. He was a great innovator, he developed the first baby sitting device that actually worked..St Patrick’s day in my Grandparents home when I was a child was a huge celebration and much Guinness was drunk (and spilled!). What I loved best was the singing. Everyone was expected to take their turn and sing their favourite song. I listened enraptured, to mournful songs of love, betrayal, heartache and exile, it was all so wonderful. One particular St Patrick’s Day when I was about eleven years old my Grandaddy insisted that I too, should entertain the company, and sing a song.. So I belted out my own rendition of the then current No 1 in the charts You’re the Devil in Disguise by Elvis Presley, with lots of hip gyrations! He never asked me again! Have a good one love Maggie x

Lovely blog Maggie, I love to hear people talk of their family celebrations and the memories that are treasured,
"I'll walk you home again Kathleen" was special to my parents as dad used to sing it to mum, her name was Kathleen..The record played in our house was by Joseph Locke....
Happy St Patricks Day to you ....
