Whilst pottering in my back garden today,I noticed this little greenfinch sitting on the peanut feeder,he sat very still even when I moved a little closer to him, which they would normally fly away if anyone came near,I wondered if he was unwell simply because he sat so still,I even tried to tempt him with a little water but to avail.I went inside to get my camera assuming that he would have flown away by the time I came out,but he was still there sitting very still, so I took a couple of pictures of him, then a blackbird landed on the peanut feeder and my little friend was pushed off the perch,he landed on the edge of the lawn near the hedge I went over to him to see if he was ok he was just sitting there `stunned maybe`,sadly the next time I had a peep at him to check if he was ok, he had died…poor little fella,so I ended up doing the only thing I could and that was to bury him,I was not going to let the many cats thats live round here have him for dinner,so he is now laid to rest among the day lillies, conifer and pretty little pink flowers that I don`t know the name of…R.I.P Little one x

Aaw...poor wee thing...maybe he had a close encounter with a cat and died of shock...

It's never nice having to do the necessary... :(

It`s the second time I`ve had to do this, last year it was a little goldfinch that also sat very still on the niger seeds and then suddenly he was on the lawn,so I went out and picked him up to try and help him but, he died in my hands,
Hence another buriel, that made me weep buckets...

Ooh no!! You don't think there could be something nasty in the niger seeds, occasionally...do you?

Oh, I hope not karen,it`s very strange that they are seemingly ok one minute and dead the next...

30 May, 2012

Yes...I agree... :(

Are they spraying fields near you, or anything like that?

30 May, 2012

Not as far as I know Karen...maybe these little birds are older than we think and it`s just there time to go to that little birds nest in the sky...

Yes...maybe they just look for the best place to go...

I have that with ferral cats...they all seem to expire on my back doorstep...

Oh dear,do you end up giving them a buriel too?

Its an RSPB site I think that you should read it, they want to monitor its progress.......dreadful......

I can get quite upset about these little birds especially when I try to help them but they die anyway, I think he looks a little sad...
Pamg...went on RSPB and had a look at there article about finches, you can download a form and give information about any sick or dead birds that you find in your gardenwhich I did, so maybe my information may help them to find out more about this Trichmonosis assuming that my little finch had this disease...
Hywel...couldn`t do anything else really with many cats in the area they would have used him as a toy or eaten him...

Not nice reading is it numbty, at least your information may help them
