How long does it take to chit the potatoes, please. How long should the new shoot be before they are ready to be planted? This is certainly a good idea of yours to bed them onto wood shavings.

You need to make sure there are no more than 2 sprouts on each potato so all of the energy is thrust into a good chitted shoot.
Some say the potatoes have chitted once they sprout, other say the sprouts should be up to 2 in (5 cm) long. So essentially, just plant them when the growing conditions are right: anywhere between March and May, depending on your climate (ie, after the last frost).
If you have more than one shoot from each potato you can cut them in half so you have more potatoes to plant. After you cut the seed potato, make sure you keep it clean and dip it in lime or wood ash to seal the cut and it will callous over. Keep them in cool dry conditions until ready to plant

Thanks Andrearichter, this is really helpful to me. I will check on the amount of shoots on each potato as I think some have more than two. They are in a cool, dry place, I live in Shropshire, UK and I have read that I need to wait until after the last frost (hopefully I can guess this correctly) The shoots certainly aren't 2 in long at present so hopefully I can keep them slowly growing for the next 2-3 weeks before I plant them out. Should I be doing any special preparations to the beds they are to go into, in the meantime. Again thanks for your help and I am so pleased I found this forum.
