I put her in a jam jar, we had a good study with maginfying glass's etc and she's now in a wee tank for the lads to take to school today. Then we'll take her up the forest road and let her go...far, far away.

They are indeed. The diamond on the back of its head and the zig-zag along its length are very distinctive. On the male these marks tend to be black with the body being grey, they look considerably more sinister. Thats not to take anything away from the females though, they can still hurt just as much! lol~

Thanks Suey.
We had a good look at it with an eye loop, that means getting your face right up to the glass jar, the images were fantastic, they are so beautifully detailed, I wish I could take photos to capture that too.

What an incredible experience - and I hope "Teacher" was duly impressed with that addition to the "Nature Table" which I am sure doesn't exist in today's classes....LOL They really are very beautiful creatures - and what a thrill to see one SO close. I only caught a glimpse of one once - when walking on a pheasant shoot (no I wasn't shooting - just running the dogs!) and one of my labs sprang straight up in mid air - all of 3 feet! The cause - an adder slithering away into the bracken. It made us all tighten our "nicky tams" ..if you know what they are!!!

Arn't Nicky Tams something that is tied or wrapped around the leg, bit like a gaiter?
Yes they had a good time with 'Daz' the adder. I was in there much longer than intended. Staff were just as delighted as like you, they had not seen one before.
I was in there for nearly 1.5 hrs, kids were really keen and loads of Q&A's. We only called it a day because it was 'home time'.
Off to another school in the morning as word travels fast around here.

Evening GF....how did you other school visit go? I'll bet the kids were fascinated...you have sure started something and how wonderful that somebody cares enough to do so. I'll bet many of these children - when they grow up will look back and remember the day the Daz was brought to school.!!
Any more bookings - or does Daz get her freedom tomorrow?!

Hello A.
Yes it did go well. Just as keen and interested. Good fun. Not being an expert, any questions I was not able to answer fully I left with them to find out more..... and to let me know too sometime (I'm even setting homework now!!!) lol.
After she had a long bask in this afternoon's sunshine (yes I did say 'Sunshine') my youngest and I went for a long walk with Daz into the hills. We let her go in a place where she can find sunshine(?) shelter, food and a few rocks to bask on. It is also a place where she will never have to look at another human being ever again.

'Morning GF....delighted to hear that you have been the Good Samaritan and that Daz is back where she belongs - having set the homework challenge too....what a great idea and I am sure the teachers were delighted. A bit of spontaneity...like I said before ....something they will never forget. Especially country schoolkids - always more receptive than the city lot who are too street-wise but who really know little of life. All the teachers in my husband's family have said the same over the decades...they much preferred teaching in little country schools. A good job well done then, GF....and a lovely ending to Daz's saga ...great..I like happy endings!

Hello A.
Yep, she's back out in the wilderness. Today has been sunny! Yippeeee!!! and I can imagine her up on the rock where we left her.
The staff at the schools we delighted too (none has seen an adder before despite living around here for many years) and were just as keen as the kids. In fact it was a staff member who told the other school about Daz.
I grew up in the country and I think it does give us a good all round approach to life. But then again it take all sorts.
