thanks dee...There are several out in my garden, but seem to only like my snapdragons and some other unknown plant. Both have nearly finished for the year so I am letting these guys have a good munch.

Pretty fellow! Can't seem to find an ID to match this creature anywhere, NN. My wildlife biology prof son hasn't yet either... perhaps you should send this photo to the Natural History Dept. at Memorial for an ID. The nearest I found was this, but it's European...:

Dead right Newfie, it is a caterpiller. After looking in my book I think it is one known as the Figure of Eight (Diloba caeruleocephala). Perhaps Bonkers can confirm or otherwise.

I have no idea what it is, and I have never noticed it before, but I've only had a digital camera for a couple of years so I wouldn't have noticed the detail.
