Clivia miniata - Clivia, Kaffir Lily

Clivia miniata - Clivia, Kaffir Lily (Clivia miniata - Clivia, Kaffir Lily)

This Clivia was blooming at the Mission Bay Resort. I have never seen one bloom this time of year...their normal bloom time is late Winter into Spring. Photo taken Sept. 12, 2009.

Sandra:

Are you sure it's a Clivia? They tend to have a pretty distinct time of when they bloom...typically late Winter, and early Spring.

It sounds so unusual for a Clivia to bloom all year.

Milky, thanks!

Wow! It's a very floweriferous plant! I've actually seen a few more plants around with blooms...it's still pretty unusual to see them flowering this time of year.

This looks like one of the other Clivia species, or is an interspecific cross with C. miniata. The pendulous florets and the tubular shape of the floret indicate a different species. Either way, this would explain the unusual flowering time. Some of the six species flower a few months either side of C. miniata. Some species can even manage up to four flowerings per year with and average of 3 annual blooms.

Capegardener:

Most likely it's a hybrid. There' a lot of work with hybridizing here in California.
