these are 6-8" tall so are they autumnale or speciosum? leaves are big and broad in the spring.

As i understand them, Autumnal is the small flowered type that's about 6" and Speciosum about 9" with larger flowers, 'Waterlily' is one of these (i have this one).

so as they are all bigger than 8" should i assume they are C. speciosum?

Hmmm, Speciosum should have 6-8" wide blooms though !
Autumnals should have 2" blooms.
Yours look like smaller flowers Seaburn and it's throwing me off a bit !!!
