Eccemocarpus scaber (Chilean Glory Vine) (Eccremocarpus scaber (Chilean glory flower))

Thanks to our poor summer, this plant is only just getting going in my garden, but it is lovely. It's a half hardy perennial that I grew from seed acquired via the GoY Seed Swap page last year. I will try to overwinter a few plants, but otherwise I will grow it from seed again next year.

It will probably surprise you by returning next year!
Admittedly, mine was on a south facing wall, yet despite it's description it had lasted for 5 seasons when I moved.

Beautiful Sid and what a treat to have at this time of year can imagine it with a big fat pumpkin sat at the bottom of it due to the colour ..lovely.

Collect some seed just in case - they grow very easily from seed. I used to sow mine late January.

I grew these from seed Meanie. January seems very early - do you keep yours in warmth?

Oh how pretty...I really like the look of this plant...

Haven't seen an all yellow one before; I thought they had reddish orange tubes with yellow tips dipped in gold: very vivid. This blends better, esp. w/ the verbena. Very nice.

This is the first time I've grown it - will grow it again next year. I know you can get orange and red as well...

I ordered a packet of Chilean Glory flower seed from a catalog today. Hope they turn out as lovely as these! The catalog comment said hummingbirds love them.

Looks like something a Hummingbird should love...they love bright colorful and tube shapes especially.

Hi Cat - I can't imagine a bird so tiny it could hover and feed from flowers like this. Just amazing. It is an ambition of mine to one day see a hummingbird :-)

I was raised with them...my dad loved to see how many would come to his feeder...he kept it in the dining room window and the window was open in the summer time..lol..they would buzz right in and have a word if the feeder were empty..and we witnessed many a hummer battle while eating our meals...very interesting little characters..I have caught them and brought them out of windows for release when they have followed a bright color into a wrong turn..
My cat Larry caught one, one day..David was home alone.. He told me the story...Larry came in from off our upper deck with his mouth closed and a sharp little beak poking out of it..David had been ill but was beginning to get around. He said he heard a cheeping noise coming out of Larry's mouth..he called to Larry. Larry came to him and opened his mouth...lol..the Hummer flew out of Larry's mouth and he and David for dove for it, I understand a battle raged. But David being much taller, managed to catch the Hummer, much to Larry's dismay and it was released to buzz off into the great blue yonder...David was thrilled to have managed it as he still had chemo brain and his balance was off..lol...he loved telling that story... :)

Hi Cat - oh my, how funny...the thought of Big Larry with cheeping coming from him and a beak sticking out of his mouth x-D LOL What a tale that little hummer had to tell his friends and family when he got home! "You'll never guess what happened to me today!!" (as he wrings the wet out of his feathers)....lovely story, thank you Cat :-)

It was a great story told by the Big Guy himself..he laughed so hard and it was so nice to hear him laugh at that point....Larry did a good job...lol.. :) Pretty special Cat..

Hummingbirds are amazing and super fun to watch! I didn't know they resided only in the Americas until I watched a show recently on our public broadcast station (the video is online at www.pbs.org, under Nature... "Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air"). My seeds arrived in the mail, and I am SO ready for winter to be over!! lol ... Sid, I do get hummingbirds every summer, so if these Chilean Glory vines grow for me & climb my trellis (that's the plan), I'm sure I'll be able to get a photo... Cat - funny story! I'm glad Larry the Cat didn't eat the hummer!

LOL..Charlie Larry has never bothered to eat a bird. He loves to watch them and snap his tail at them & chatter, how or why he caught that hummer is beyond me...I don't even think he realizes they could be food. He will only eat dry cat food, no fresh meat or fish of any kind...
