Are you going to train it along that fence Jacque or up as a standard ? Be patient for the flowers - it will be worth waiting for. :-)

I had never grown one before, but like you have always admired mature specimens at National Trust gardens and the like. When I moved into this house 15 months ago there was one on the back wall of the house - tangled up inside it were two wooden trellises (torn from the wall), a metal trellis which had become part of the plant and yards of wire. It had also grown behind the downpipe from the roof and was pulling it away from the wall ! I let it flower (beautifully) and then took it down and pruned it in August. I have since then put a Gripple wire system in place and in the next few weeks will be giving it it's winter prune. There will be less flowers this year, but it will be trained and looked after from now on. :-))
