Wow, is it always this colour and is it herbaceous?

Bornagain:

Yes, it is always this color...and it is an evergreen shrub to 10 - 12 feet / 3.1 - 3.7 meters tall.

It is glorious can we grow them over here ?

Doubt it. It looks a bit exotic. I'll have a look in my plant encyclopedia!

Mushybanna:

Acalypha species/varieties are extremely tropical. They are native to the Pacific South Sea Islands. They can be planted as annuals though...if you can find them for sale.

Thanks Delonix. Saved me looking it up! It's a fantastic looking plant!

Paulthegardener:

You're welcome!

These shrubs are pretty widely grown here because of their
beautiful leaves and drought tolerance. I have a large Acalypha macrophylla in my backyard. It has huge variegated leaves. I've posted a photo a few days ago.

I shall go look now.

I may add another photo of my Acalypha soon.

What a cool string type! Hope you snipped a twig to propagate it at home!

17 Oct, 2009

Yes, it is.

No, I didn't snip a twig...they are pretty commonly
available for sale here.

Mushybanna:

I've just read that Acalypha species and their cultivars are hardy down to 40 degrees / 4.5 degrees for short periods...hope that helps you.
