Colchicums are not Crocus (Sorry Morgana). Best time to buy them is August/September as they flower from Sept onwards and then make roots and leaves afterwards. You can sometimes pick them up cheaply when they have flowered in the packets and as long as they are planted straight away, they are ok.
We grow them under the trees in the garden.

http://www.rainyside.com/features/plant_gallery/bulbs/ColchicumWaterLily.html Here it states autum crocus

Still like some will add them to my list for next year.

They can call it Autumn Crocus if they choose, but it is still not a Crocus. Same family, yes, but different in various ways. Colchicum have 6 stamens. Crocus have 3, the seed pods are different and the bulb itself is also very different and finally the leaves are larger and wider.
There are ones which flower in Spring too, but they are much harder to find to purchase, sadly.

Thank you Owdboggy for the information, if I come across the spring ones any where on my travels I will let you know where you can purchase them from
