This is a male Purple Finch in breeding colors with 2 male Goldfinches getting their bright yellow colors. I used to never get Purple Finches in my yard but 2 years ago they appeared and I've been lucky that they keep returning. During winter of 2006 I had 40-some here all winter long. I'm hoping that the 8-10 birds that I'm seeing now will stay to nest here. These birds should be called "Raspberry" Finches instead of Purple Finches.

We have the yellow finches (always in a pair!) but I have never seen a purple finch. You are correct, raspberry would be much more suiting! Great picture!
