This is an aloe I think - a succulent but not a cactus.

Ahhh! You see it takes an expert to know that! Any idea how to care for it?

Same as a cactus . Clay pot. Gritty compost. Good drenchings when watering. Allow to dry out before the next watering. Keep cool and dry in winter.

I have lots of this, I put them in an elevated area or I formed the soil like a small mountain, then put stones around it to support as it grows. and there's wider space for the new ones that grow later. It's an aloe-vera family. careful with the spikes, just hold it very gently. It's called crocodile's tongue.

lucky you ian, dont know alot about them but bigger pots would be a start using newpaper to hold the plant while potting,, ouch! dont overwater like dryness rather than wet, but not sure on how far inbetween each water period sorry, anyway its a start, doesnt hywel have cacti, umm i know someone on here does, check out his pics ian, sandra does them to
