Ensete ventricosum - Abyssinian Banana - In San Diego, CA. (Ensete ventricosum Abyssinian Banana)

A small Abyssinian banana. LOL! Yes, it's taller than the house. Photo taken today (Oct. 23, 2009). This plant is about 25 feet / 7.6 meters or taller.

The leaves are just torn -- which is normal due to the wind.

No way would you get a red banana to grow to this size, ours have reached over 6 ft but the leaves grow very wide and look more beautiful, less shredded.

The leaves on this plant are much larger than you can imagine (the photo doesn't show it off). The leaves tend to get shredded when they grow very tall like this one (that's pretty much on any banana). The strong, very hot, dry Santa Ana Winds do a lot of damage from fall - early spring.

Most likely this banana is dead now. Ensete only lives for about 4 years in the ground then blooms and dies.
