Pretty Poppies

Pretty Poppies (Papaver)

Comments on this photo

In the foreground the purple-blue flower spike looks like a Salvia and the pink pom pom behind looks like it has Papaver (poppy) leaves but i've not seen the flowers look that pretty before, so i'm probably completely wrong !!!!!!
On the left, that blue-purple tall flower is a bit unclear but someone else will be able to name it in one !!!

The pink pom pom ones shed their leaves earlier in the year and the heads left behind looked like poppy heads, I popped a couple in a paper bag and shook them a bit before hanging them up and the bags filled up with seeds so I think they are poppys. I was going to sprinkle the seeds next year but I have been told that the can seed themselves everywhere so it might be better to see what pop up naturally perhaps

I reckon that the blue spike to the left is a Delphinium.....:-))

I have done a bit of research on Delphiniums after your comment Spritzhenry and I'm sure your right about that one, I'm sure there were blue one and white ones in a little cluster together which have lost all their flowers now but were stunning all summer :)

Agree with Spritz, the one on the very left is a delphinium, but the other purply one in front of the poppy looks like a salvia or a veronica...and yes, Numbaten, they are definitely poppies. They will more than likely have seeded themselves and pop up again ( maybe not in quite the same place - or even the same colour! ) next year. Poppies from seed can take YEARS to germinate, but lie dormant in the ground. I have these, and some years they're the same colour as yours, and other years they're a paler pink....it's always a joy and a surprise to see what pops up! Enjoy the anticipation!

Have you cut them down to the ground, Elle? Watch out in the spring when the new shoots appear - they are slug and snail magnets!
