It's really quite sad how exciting it is finding out what it is! I think you must be right as all the asnswers here and on my question say quince! Thank you for you input! I'm off to phone my mum and tell her I think you've solved it hehe! Elle :)

Andrewr is right, Numbaten, it's a Japanese Flowering Quince ( is that right, Andrewr?? Chaenomeles )....lovely coral-orange pink flowers in Spring, and spiny branches! I have quite a few, and apparently you can make quince jelly from the fruits but I've never tried! If you want more, you can grow them very easily from the seeds you'll find in the fruit, once it's shrivelled and started to dry out. I cut mine back with electric hedge-trimmers to make a neat hedge...tough as old boots!
