Welcome back Mad...what a great garden your daughter has ...and I DO envy her that pool...it looks SO mature. ...and a real oasis too. It is amazing how the wildlife "find" a safe haven isn't it. Reminds me of my childhood when I had a pond in our garden and I would sit for hours watching the fish and sticklebacks etc...and toads too...LOL

Yes it does look mature doesn't it? I remember when she dug it out about 6 years ago. She dug it quite early one morning, non-stop and by the next day it looked as though it had always been there - without all the plants of course. They didn't take long to establish, She was very dis-heartened when after 4 or 5 weeks it looked like green soup, but gradually as the plants established it cleared and has stayed that way.
She loves kneeling and looking into it, seeing new newts. This year she saw many, many new ones and lots of tadpoles. Frogs and Newts do eat each others' tadpoles though. There seems to be enough for all now!

Has she ever put any fish in? As a kid I was given two "goldfish " for my pool...and we called them Gilbert and Gerda..heaven knows why!! Anyway - within a very short time - there were hundreds of little tiny black goldfish and Gerda was a lot slimmer!!!! I was very popular at school and all my classmates came with their jam jars to get a couple each.....we still had masses of them...until the local heron found out.....that cut down the supplies a bit - until my father put a mesh over the top - you couldn't see it - just under the surface - but it stopped the heron!!!! We had a lot of freshwater snails too- and they kept the pool clean. Looking back - it was all very educational for a kid...and I wish I still had a pool...but there are too many trees in this garden!

No Alzheimer, no fish, but I know what you mean. In my other garden we had a large pond and had thousand of baby black goldfish. I was so surprised when I first saw them, so it must have been great for you as a child to 'discover' them, and what fun to be so popular at school, with all the jam jars etc.
We had guinea pigs when our children were young and it was an ongoing source of supply to friends of our two young sons as they multiplied so fast.
Yes, snails too, she has those, and we used to have a couple of freshwater mussels which are good for keeping the water clear. A pond is a never ending source of pleasure and interest isn't it?
