Fruiting opuntia in the NBG, the Crimea, Ukraine
Comments on this photo
Yes, Sandra, it's a hardy Opuntia growing outside without sheltering in the NBG, the South Coast of the Crimea.
Last year I took an experiment with my non-hardy Opuntias grown from the seeds: I have left them outside in -5 C degree frost for a week, and then brought inside. One of five stays alive. And some hardy Opuntias may stay outside in -20 C degrees! I want them to make a kind of small exotic bed in the South side of our garden. :)

i planted some out here but the slugs devoured them....

Sandra, we don't have many slugs because it's not so wet here as it is in your country.

mine are all tucked up in my grow shed or the winter...gets cold out there but they are nice and dry so they should survive. it was just above freezing here last night.

Yes, it's Winter outside! :) The main thing is that they all are dry, you know...They feel good, I'm sure...Oh, we have had -7 C degrees today...taking account of wind is -15 C degrees...thanks Heaven, it's snowing...
