I saw that once Sandra , the poor bird didn't stand a chance , it still upsets me when I think about it , one swooped down a few days ago when my favourite birds were on the ground feeding , the lovely white fantail and his friend the racing pigeon , it worries me each day now in case it's waiting for it's chance to get one ... :o(

Great photo San, it,s the magpies I don't like, loads around here and they chase everything. I work nightshift and every morning I can hear the magpies going mad at the neighbours cats and have to open the window to chase them..lol

lol user, strange cause the magpies in my garden seem very edgy, almost scared, dont come down till the other birds have gone, and the doves chase them off and chase the pigeons to lol, great watching them all
sorry carole just saw you there, thats so awfull one of the doves, wouldnt have thought they would go for something bigger like that, how sad

they are quick ray, its feet didnt touch the ground, pretty big so wasnt sure what type of hawk it was, are sparrow hawks quite big

Forgot to say...kestrels tend to hover in the sky and then plummet straight down onto their prey, whereas sparrowhawks tend to watch from lower down and can weave in and out of trees etc chasing prey or snatching off floor in mid flight.Hope this helps your id !

yes that helps ray, it was a sparrowhawk then, i see kestrels over the fields when going to work, hovering like you said, love to watch them, trouble is i cant stop to take pics when driving down the lanes lol dont think the other drivers would like it
