This palm does grow outside in San Diego, CA. They prefer to grow in semi-shade to shaded areas only though. It is an understory palm native to Northern Malaysia and Thailand.
Photo taken at Rancho Soledad Nurseries on Jan. 14, 2010.

Licuala species are considered by many, the most ornamental and beautiful fan palms in the world.
I have Licuala peltata 'Sumawongii' it has the largest entire leaf in the genus. However, most Licuala palms are slow growing palms.
