Syagrus romanzoffiana - Queen Palm downed by intense El Niño Storm

Delonix...is this palm totally written off? Can it be saved? How tragic!

Yes, it's a goner. It was actually chain sawed into 3 pieces...the other pieces are closer to the sidewalk.

We are having the biggest of all the storms right now...the winds could gust to hurricane-force (75 mph / 121 kph)! There's already been wide spread
damage to telephone poles, street lights, trees(as you've seen)...and a tremeduous amount flooding. Today's storm could possibly be the strongest storm to hit San Diego since 1960.

We had one here that came up from your direction last week..winds gusting to 60...it sounded like an earthquake rumbling the house ...it woke everyone up in the middle of the night...some power outages...not mine, out town does well when the winds come from the south, the north and west can be a different story...good luck, I hope you get through it ok and without too much damage.

It probably came from the easte coast of the U.S. It only started raining here on Monday...We hadn't had any rain for more than a month before this series of storms started. I agree very strong winds can really vibrate the house...had some of that this week. : >)

I've had some damage to my plants. I'll post some pics. soon. Tonight (Jan. 21, 2010) the storm is not as bad as it was during this morning and afternoon.

Delonix....was hearing really bad things for that part of the country in the news last night (1-21-2010)...was thinking and worrying about you!

Hope this El Nino winds itself out soon! Hopefully your plants will just need some pruning and survive anyhow!

Are you anywhere near the mud slides? Hope not! that looked frightening...can't imagine that much earth just sliding and oozing down on me like that!

I'm doing well. Thanks for the concern! We're still receiving rain and thunderstorms with strong winds. The thunderstorms are suppose to last off-and-on through Friday tonight....then our typical warm and dry weather will return this weekend. These storms have been bittersweet...we needed the rain badly to help with our horrible drought. It just came all in one week though. : > )

Most of the mudslides/debris flows are in the Los Angeles area...and in northen and eastern San Diego County. This is common in burned areas...which these areas have had in recent years.

My plants won't need pruning...some just need to grow new leaves...as the some of my plants have lost many leaves in the strong winds.

We will keep lifting you up here!

They are both located around the corner from my house. I have
a pic of one which I will post tonight.
