MALE & FEMALE HAZEL FLOWERS

The Catkins have been developed for a month, but the poor female flowers you can see at the left side are only just opening, so it is unlikely they will be pollinated as the pollen has been washed off in heavy rain, also the low temperature will mean that the flowers will not set, so it will be a poor year for hazel nuts.

Thank you both, it just goes to show how diverse nature can be.

That's interesting Bob. I have hazel trees - so how can I tell the difference between male and female?
We rarely collect many nuts anyway - the squirrel gets them first.

The male are the catkins, the females are the tiny red flowers behind, you can't see the red in the photo unfortunately.
