Work to do!

Which climbers have you chosen to use please ?

I'm not sure how much sun it will get but it's sheltered and facing west. I (and the plants) will be glad of some shade. A bit of an experiment...
Trachelospermum jasminoidies, Cotoneaster frigidus cornubia, (for my birds) Lonicera henryi and whatever clematis are "going spare" at the moment and can be tried. I might keep all except the cotoneaster and the honeysuckle in pots for this year...

I have Trachelospermum jasminoides... one of my recent photos shows the leaves glowing reddish under the snow... lovely climber :o)

Ditto TT and such a beautiful perfume when in flower. Good choice Volval look forward to see how it goes later in the year.

That's a very attractive log cabin your neighbour has put there! How nice that he doesn't mind you growing climbers up it.

Yes, it's lovely. He asked me to grow things on it! It's very large - he doesn't have much garden left now so I'm sort of "joining them up". The climbers are delayed because he hasn't had time to treat it but I'm beavering away on fence-cutting, clearance, paving and ground cover. Next year there should be nest boxes. I havn't had anywhere safe from cats before.

am I right in what I am seeing there seems to be no gutter on the roof if so that could be major problem with heavy rain.

You are right Bjs! I'm discovering that right now! There's quite an overhang but I found "grooves" caused by the water across the front of the larger pots...and splashed mud up the cabin wall! Gravelling them has helped as far as that goes (neighbour doesn't mind the mud) and (I hope) we've been having maximum rain recently. I don't know why there is no gutter - it's a very well constructed building. Seems an oversight. The pots are very well-drained and the smaller things are not affected. Hoping for the best...

Why not ask your neighbour about fitting one, may be go half on cost ,you could have the drain pipe far end and save in a large water butt it would also reduce the chance of rot on the bottom of his building.

He has a lot on his mind at the moment (and little cash to spare!) but I hope we can do that. When he has cleared everything from the other side (with sun and lots of windows) I'm sure he will see the need! He won't let me help pay for it though. At present he's overwhelmed with works and clearance from his old studio.
