Yes, they are an acquired taste.

They are very common in the South Pacific Islands...Hawaii has used them for different beliefs for many hundred of years. They originated in Polynesia from what I can recall. I think they are used mostly for luck or to keep evil spirits away.

It should be easy to find one for sale. They're commonly available... however, depending on size it could be very expensive though.
