I would think they would be a very common houseplant there. Unfortunately, they are very tender palms and would not survive outdoors in your climate.

This is Dypsis lutescens (fka: Chrysalidocarpus lutescens) - Butterfly, Golden Cane or Areca palm are its common names. They are extremely common here. It's one of the most widely used house palm in the world.
I have many of these in my yard.
