Doing well in a container.

All my violas have burst out in flower again with the warmer temps. and sunshine - I wish I could say the same about the pansies, though!

I love this color. I've been sold on violas, common here for their tolerance to chill, but each face is so different. I must have many this year.

Next year, it will be violas and no pansies, Gt. I know we may have a milder winter, but there's such a good range of colours available, I'm happy to choose them.

I agree. These are one of the only things I've seen reseed pretty easily here. And you have cool enough climes they are happy too. Sounds like your pansies didn't please you at all this year. :-)

They gave up at the first cold spell, and haven't really recovered. The ones I've left in, I might try cutting back to 'liven them up' a bit. Kill or cure! LOL.

Little smiling faces, very pretty......

I've just posted more photos - all the violas I planted are doing REALLY well, so they're a delight! :-)))

I do like Violas, they get very scruffy here, it must be the salt winds.....
20 Mar, 2010
How about your pansies, though? I read an Alan Titchmarsh article today, and he commented on the awfulness of pansies after the cold weather.
20 Mar, 2010
We dont grow pansies, only violas which were going very well until the bitterly cold winds got to them......!!

Oh dear. My little Pittosporum has some wind damage, sadly. I just hope it'll recover.
22 Mar, 2010
Pittosporum are tender, we lost one large one last year, it was over 5ft too.....:>((
23 Mar, 2010
I asked a question about it when I planted it - I was assured it would be fine! It isn't. :-(((

Complain to the nursery, we have taken plants back and had our money back, one was a monkey puzzle tree, and a trachelospermum, most reputable GCs will refund or credit note if you have proof of purchase.
24 Mar, 2010
Sorry - I meant on GOY!!....
24 Mar, 2010
Oh dear, I would have told you, some are hardy, and others are not as you have found out.
27 Mar, 2010
Everyone agreed that it should be fine...I did fleece it, but after the frosts, when I took the fleece off, we had a strong wind - and the damage is from that.
27 Mar, 2010
That is what killed ours, which variety was it? the common one is very hardy......
29 Mar, 2010
'Silver Magic'...I have to admit that I couldn't remember its name - I've just checked in my plant list! I'm leaving it for a while before I cut it back or anything.

Good idea, we thought we had lost our Melianthus, found it was growing underneath all the dead foliage, so pleased.
3 Apr, 2010
It looks very poorly today. :-((
3 Apr, 2010
Oh dear......sorry to hear that, I have noticed we have lost a lot of grasses.......
5 Apr, 2010
SIGH........:-((((
5 Apr, 2010
"they" dont tell you that grasses can be killed off in a bad winter, will have to buy some more now, cannot have a grasses bed with no grass !!!
6 Apr, 2010
Not really...rather a contradiction of terms! I've got to decide whether to replace the Pittosporum. I rather think I will - maybe if I get one soon, it'll get its roots well in in the growing season.
6 Apr, 2010
You might have to buy a larger specimen too.
